UX RESEARCH INTERN @ EVERYBODY CLEANUP
Overview
Everybody CleanUp is a startup who's mission is to provide a safer, more effective alternative to harsh chemical cleaners all while removing consumers from the cycle of single-use plastic.
During the spring and summer of 2022, I interned at CleanUp as a UX researcher and design assistant.
Duration: April to August 2022
Role: UX Research and Product Design
Responsibilities
My time at CleanUp was spent conducting and compiling user / market research and SWOT analyses, assisting with visual design decisions, and spearheading the company's sustainability initiatives by applying for and accelerating the BCORP and LEED Certification processes.
Market Research
CleanUp's mission is centered around providing users with non-toxic cleaning products that do not compromise on efficacy. In order to give the company a sense of the existing market, I conducted a market review of the green cleaning space to assist the company in shaping its product offerings.
I looked into the volume, price, price per ounce of concentrated product, ingredient lists, certifications listed on packaging, and sustainability claims.
User Research
I began my user research by looking at Amazon and other online reviews of competing products to find existing user pain points. I organized the pain points into categories so that the user insights could drive CleanUp's product development. Next, I reached out to my community asking members of CleanUp's target audiences pointed questions about their experience with green cleaning products. With each iteration of the design prototypes, I returned to my user community and conducted more interviews to ensure that user feedback was consistently driving the company's innovation.
SWOT Analyses
I also conducted various SWOT Analyses which we used to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to business competition in the green cleaning space.
Sustainability Initiatives
Throughout my time at CleanUp, I also organized the BCORP and LEED Certification Applications.
Reflection
CleanUp was my first UX research and product design internship. Working for a startup dedicated to sustainability on a community-oriented and collaborative team was an amazing experience and it inspired me to further pursue a career in design. I learned how to get my immediate community involved, work within constraints without compromising the user experience, take on a range of creative and technical tasks and help out in anyway I could on as many projects as possible.
